Christian metal. The merging of the messianic message with loud, raucous, rowdy rock ‘n’ roll. To some, this sounds oxymoronic, the mismatched mixing of the sacred with the profane. But to the born-again mousse-abuse mavericks in Legacy–Matt Rice (guitars), John Rice (bass), John Jenkins (drums), Fred Blanchard (guitars), and Doug Meacham (vocals)–it sounded like a match made in, well, Heaven.

The band’s creation began on September 17, 1987, in Reynoldsburg, Ohio. Eric Adams, a youth minister, felt called to build and manage a band that could not only rock your face off, but share the love of God while doing so. With John Rice, Matt Rice, and Matt Reedy already on board, Eric reached out to Fred Blanchard, the younger brother of a friend of his, wondering if he knew of any singers seeking work. As divine providence would have it, Fred’s band had just broken up that day, so he and Doug Meacham were both available to join.

Undecided on a name, the band fluctuated between Xristas, Threshold, and Cross as they strived to learn the songs and mesh their individual talents into one smooth, all-cylinders-cranking metal machine. But before they actually played any gigs, Matt Reedy left the fold and Blanchard enlisted his friend John Jenkins as a replacement. With this infusion of fresh blood also came a new band name–Legacy.

Legacy made no bones about being a Christian metal band. While the music was important, a sizzling salvo of heavy guitars, thunderous rhythms, melodic hooks, and layered harmonies, the band placed equal, if not more, importance on their message, ensuring their lyrics cleaved true to who they were as men of faith.

Claiming Columbus, Ohio as their home and citing bands like Stryper, Dokken, and Scorpions as influences, Legacy launched themselves into the live circuit, playing their first show at Tree of Life Christian School where Fred was still a senior. But the band did not limit themselves to Christian audiences; instead, they took to heart Jesus’ command to take His message into the world and invaded secular venues on a regular basis. One of their biggest accomplishments was winning the Battle of the Bands at the renowned heavy metal club Alrosa Villa in the winter of ‘89, becoming the first white-metal band to ever take the crown in that head-banging competition.

Gaining momentum, Legacy opened for several Christian rock legends, including REZ, Shout, Sacred Warrior, Mylon Lefevre & Broken Heart, and Allies.  In fact, one of the band’s favorite memories involves opening for Mylon Lefevre and REZ at the Ohio Center in downtown Columbus on New Year’s Eve ‘88. As Legacy rocked out a 20-minute set, a mob rushed the stage and began pummeling their approval in an impromptu mosh pit. Legacy ripped through five songs like a pack of righteously rogue soldiers, feeding off the frenzy in front of them, and exited the stage totally fired up. Only later did they learn that Lefevre had been watching in the wings and told his road manager, “The crowd seems to really like these boys. Why don’t we let them do another song?” Too bad that Legacy, too stoked to sit still, had already left!

Of course, every band has their amusing road stories and Legacy is no exception. En route to a show in Illinois, John engaged in his usual quirk of practicing “air drums” on the steering wheel while listening to some tunes, only this time he was practicing with a pen. Like a scene in some slapstick comedy, the tip went flying off, unbeknownst to John, who didn’t realize what had happened until he had “air drummed” ink all over the roof of the truck, himself, and pretty much everything else in the cabin in one big, black, splatterific mess.

But all was not light and laughter. Back in the 80’s, Christian metal was considered controversial, labeled as blasphemous by conservative believers who lambasted bands for wedding what they deemed “the devil’s music” to the holy gospel. Protesters repeatedly rallied at their shows, spewing their judgmental bullets. But Legacy simply ignored the laments of the extremists and marched on with their mission to rock for the Rock and sound a call to arms to all those metal-loving believers striving to stay strong in a cold, dark, dying world.

Legacy’s star seemed to be on a meteoric rise. They garnered praise wherever they went. They were featured in CCM Magazine and Heaven’s Metal Magazine.  Their singles appeared on compilations from Pure Metal and Star Song Records. They were on the brink of being signed by a major Christian label.  But then it all unraveled. Matt left the band to pursue alternate ministries; Fred departed soon after. Within a year, the band experienced a string of personnel pains, and before a new incarnation could be solidified, grunge steam-rolled onto the scene and the radical shift in the musical winds shattered any chance Legacy might have had at wider success. By the spring of ‘92, Doug and John remained the only original members and during a telephone conversation, both agreed Legacy was no more. They had answered the call, danced with destiny, and now it was time to move on.

The members of Legacy remain eternally grateful to God for granting them the opportunity to serve and worship Him through the medium of metal. The band may someday squeeze a small reunion into their busy schedules and possibly even crank out some new music, but regardless of what the future holds for Legacy, their heritage in the Christian metal realm is one they can be proud of.

Un reverendo (me refiero solo a un reverendo, nada de un reverendo hijo de…) de Reynoldsburg, Ohio, se le ocurrió armar una banda que no solo recrease un buen rock duro, sino aparte dejar un mensaje religioso. Por ende contacto a tres de sus feligreses: Matt y John Rice, y John Jenkins para este propósito. Posteriormente un amigo del ministro le consiguió a un segundo guitarrista (Fred Blanchard) y este a su vez a un cantante, Doug Meacham.

Ya como quinteto, todo esto sucediendo en 1987, encontraron un nombre apropiado, Legacy y empezaron a rockear y llevar el mensaje de su religión a sus coterráneos (dije coterráneos, no cotorras o con terráqueos).

Lo que parece es que este disco que lleva el nombre de Legacy, contiene unas 14 canciones que datan de distintas épocas del combo entre 1988 y el ’89, y el 2000.

Si bien Eonian Records hasta ahora me ha provisto de excelentísimas bandas hair metal en su mayoría, (y ni hablar de la calidad de producción de sus cds), Legacy esta un poco mas orientado a un metal melódico, teniendo como influencias a agrupaciones como Stryper y Dokken, y habiendo sido la apertura de bandas mas consagradas como Shout de mi estimado Ken Tamplin, y Mylon Lefevre & Broken Heart entre otras.

Aunque se pueden apreciar algunas facetas que se han usado mas en el HR que en el heavy metal como temas en tempos menos acelerados.

Creo que vale destacar el buen uso a dos tiempos rítmicos en “What a World”.

Lógicamente si estas buscando algo novedoso y original, no lo vas a encontrar acá, pero en cambio, si estas detrás de nuevas opciones de material de tendencia tradicional, este homónimo compensará tu dinero invertido.

Legacy is a hard rock band that circulates around the rock scene in the late 80's and toured with bands such as REZ, Shout, Sacred Warrior, Mylon Lefevre & Broken Heart and Allies. Yes, Legacy is a Christian hard rock band and now Eonian Records has released their only album were the songs has been written between 1988-1990. This is a typical 80s hard rock band that sounds like Stryper, Dokken and Firehouse. Singer Doug Meacham has a voice that reminds a bit of Don Dokken mixed with Michael Sweet (Stryper). This is album filled with loud riffs, tight rhythms, huge melodic hooks and big choruses with great arrangements. The album has 14 tracks and it could have been cut down to maybe 10 songs to lift up the album even more. But this is really nice 80’s hair-metal/hard rock with a good production. A song like Forever In Your Arms will set the Stryper hearts on fire because this is fantastic song with typical Stryper harmonies and hooks. It’s Real is a cracker filled with brilliant hook lines and the chorus is fantastic in the best Dokken style. Cross The Line is a straight in your-face rocker with strong riffs. Red, White And Blue brings Dokken on the map again with riff strong guitars and a great chorus. One Way Or The Other is a powerful rocker with strong melodies, pounding drums and a Stryper sounding chorus. Eonian Records has re-mastered this digitally and put in great line notes about Legacy and their story. Doug Meacham, Matt Rice, Fred Blanchard, John D. Rice and John Jenkins could have been named together with the other Christian bands like Stryper, Shout, Petra, Whiteheart and more if this would have been released 20 years ago. But now you get a chance to hear their never released album in a nice package. So if you’re into those mentioned band then check out Legacy.

Christian (sometimes called white) metal rose to the fore in the early to mid 1980's. Thanks in most part to the fame and fortune of Stryper, Christian band left the ghetto of contemporary Christian music to unashamedly mixed their faith with hard rock, heavy metal, and plenty of spandex and mousse. Unfortunately, and as usual, most Christian artists were merely duplicating existing music trends and merely adding 'Jesus' to the lyrics. It was very difficult then, as it is today, to find a Christian band that was a true trendsetter. In this case, imitation was not the best form of flattery.

Hailing from Columbus, Ohio, Christian melodic hard rock and heavy metal band Legacy sought to ride the crest of the current wave. Invoking peers and influences like Stryper, Dokken, and Scorpions, Legacy hoped enter the fray with faith-based melodic metal. Legacy, the self-titled archival collection from Eonian Records, is their, well, legacy. Equal parts Stryper and Holy Soldier with a little Barren Cross, Legacy bristles with sound vocal arrangements, a well-paced rhythm section, and dynamic fretwork. The songs are typical of late 80's glam and melodic hard rock or metal, so there is nothing remarkably new or dazzling here. A song like Salvation is Law or Cross the Line have a heavier metal edge. Conversely, Red White, & Blue or Change of a Broken Heart is pure melodic hard rock. A typical 80's rock/metal appears in Forever in Your Arms, where you can here the clear influence of Stryper. In content, the message is also typical of Christian metal of the day: a combination of testimony and proclamation of faith in Jesus Christ.

Adding this all up means you have, simply, generic 80's Christian metal. Many songs inspire in faith and music, but many are simply average representations of everything that was going on in the genre in their day. Nevertheless, this archival collection is worth your listening interest as a proper and entertaining piece from the period. Recommended.

Legacy was a Christian hard rock/metal band that formed in 1987 and was based in Ohio. In 1992, the band fall apart but this Eonian release is now here as an official documentation of Legacy’s legacy (sorry, I had to say it). As is the case with many Eonian releases, I don’t think the band ever had an official album release. These songs were recorded between 1988 and 1990 and the liner notes mention the band had released singles within the Christian metal scene but there’s no mention of EPs or full-fledged albums. Either the band itself distributed these songs or perhaps many of these songs were recorded so that they could shop themselves around to record labels. As a result of these random recording sessions, the sound quality wavers but not by a whole lot.

Their influences are pretty obvious - Stryper and Dokken (they also cite Scorpions but I don’t hear them as much). The album is okay but I really feel that the first four songs are the best. After only hearing them a few times, they stayed in my head. Other favorites are the energetic “Soldiers Unite” and “What A World” (which is the hardest rocking song on the album). Most of the rest comes across as bland to me. These songs were produced by the band so maybe that’s the problem. If the band had a legit producer in the studio with them to point them in the right direction for these sessions they probably could have turned out higher number of quality songs.

Fans of Christian hair metal will probably find this an interesting release because of their similar sound to Stryper (Dough Meachum does NOT sound like Michael Sweet though) and the fact that they don’t try to hide their faith in an effort to make themselves more accessible to the secular crowd.

“Great guitar, killer chorus and full throttle adrenaline!”

With the Christian cross burning bright and a strong spiritual sense of calm LEGACY have laid dormant since the eighties but with the resurrection of a volatile fan base they have risen once again to unleash their upcoming self-titled release on Eonian Records.

With this release you get fourteen tracks of shooting guitar riffs, mesmerizing lyrics, searing vocals and a midsection that revives the dead. Listening to the opening track “Salvation is Law” you can tell these boys have a lot in common with the super group STRYPER and even display hints of the DOKKEN. The dual guitar work of Matt Rice and Fred Blanchard is flamboyant as they reel off powerful licks on “It's Real”.

Look to the sky and dream as the melodic rocker “Forever In Your Arms” takes hold of your senses. LEGACY not only can drop the hammer on the metal side of music but also show a side of sensitively that will show you the higher power. Classic harmonies adorn “Change of a Broken Heart”, which brings back memories of the great bands of the eighties that were so pungent back in the day.

“Soldiers Unite” is just one of the most powerful tunes on this new release. Doug Meacham is amazing on vocals; he has great control and hits the high notes flawlessly.

Just having a Christian rock stamp doesn’t mean you can’t rock big time; LEGACY can kick it with the best of them and you can hear it on “One Way or the Other” which has high-energy AOR all over it. Great guitar, killer chorus and full throttle adrenaline!

The heavens are shining on “Live It”; a beautiful masterful tune that has it all and they bounce right back with the heaviest tune on the record with “What a World”.

What can you say about the new LEGACY CD except get ready to rock and the misunderstanding of Christian rock is deceived. Good music will always be about a special band in the name of LEGACY.

De christelijke hardrockformatie rond de broers (niet broeders) Rice wist in de periode dat ze in de openbaarheid trad (1986-1992) nooit een platencontract te verzegelen. Niet geheel terecht want de band uit Ohio opereerde binnen dezelfde scene als die andere soldiers under command Stryper of Guardian en Holy Soldier. Als je er dus niets op tegen hebt dat Jezus regelmatig eens voorbijfietst en dat Hij de bron van alles wordt genoemd, dan zijn songs als “Salvation Is Law” en “Forever In Your Arms” zeker een winkelbezoek waard.

This Christian hardrock band formed round the brothers (or should I say brethren) Rice never managed to seal a label deal in the period of their public appearance (1986-1992). Quite wrongfully so, 'cause the band from Ohio had the same qualities as those other soldiers under command Stryper or Guardian and Holy Soldier. If you don't mind that they sing most of the time about Jesus and that God is the beginning and the ending of everything, than you should consider listening to songs like “Salvation Is Law” or “Forever In Your Arms”. They may very well be food for your soul.

Zumindest einen Achtungserfolg konnten LEGACY sich Ende der 80er auf die Fahnen schreiben. Die Amerikaner veröffentlichten mit dem gleichnamigen Debüt ein Album, das im Fahrwasser von STRYPER oder DOKKEN durchaus mithalten konnte und einige starke Songs an Bord hatte. Die Band zählte sich der damals recht großen White Metal-Szene zugehörig, was sich textlich eindeutig in allen Songs niederschlägt. Dabei gab man sich, neben dem christlichen Aspekt,  aber auch teils sehr patriotisch, denn in Zeiten des 1. Golfkrieges findet sich auch eine Nummer mit Namen "Red, White And Blue" auf dem Album, die den Soldaten im Irak gewidmet war. Sieht man als Fan, den in erster Linie die Musik interessiert, von den Texten ab, bleibt ein wirklich gutes Hardrock-Album, das Spaß macht und zahlreiche treibende Rocker vorweisen kann, wie "It's Real" oder "Cross The Line", das zudem durch seine ausgezeichnete Gitarrenarbeit besticht, wie viele andere Titel auch. Remember Ohio’s Legacy, who followed closely in the footsteps of Bloodgood, Whitecross and Stryper and had a credible sound and an uncompromising message? Unfortunately, they were never rewarded a major label debut. Eonian Records, in cooperation with the former band members, has compiled and digitally re-mastered 14 songs spanning the bands’ short, but spirited career. Lead by Doug Meacham’s charismatic vocals, they mixed melodic metal rockers with radio-friendly ballads in a sincere and authentic manner. In retrospect, most of these songs, like “Soldiers Unite,” “One Way or the Other” and “What A World,” rock pretty hard. And the packaging and liner notes make this a “must grab” collectable for fans of 80’s hair metal. It’s great to see these guys – who had their hearts in the right place – finally get their tunes into the light of day.

The second new album that Eonian Records recently threw on the market is the self-titled album of Legacy, hailing from Columbus, Ohio. For the record: this is a so-called white metal band, although their sound could better be described as melodic hard rock in the vein of well-known bands like Dokken, Scorpions and maybe Stryper. You can read all about the band in the inlay, where you can also find some notes about each of the 14 tracks on offer, that date from the period 1988-2000. The band’s strong points include the twin guitar work of Rice and Blanchard, the high-pitched vocals of Meacham and the multi-layered backing vocals. Listening tips include “It’s Real”, “Cross The Line”, “Forever In Your Arms” and “What A World”. Twelfth release by Eonian and as always, the package looks quite professional.

Mit diesem Re-Release haben die Amis Ende der 80‘er ein starkes Album am Start gehabt, das man, wenn man es heute hört, immer noch als richtig frisch bezeichnen kann. Was das besondere war, zu der damaligen Zeit waren White Metal Bands wie Stryper richtig angesagt und auch die Scorpions und Dokken werden als Einflüsse der Amis genannt.

Richtig, denn mit "Salvation Is Law" kommt schon zu Beginn so eine Schlagseite Dokken durch, die Herren machen das auch richtig gut, melodischer und treibender Hard Rock, der hier regiert und sogar richtig im Ohr hängen bleibt. Auch bei "It’s Real" werden alle Melodic Fans voll bedient und mit "Cross The Line" bleibt zwar die Meldodie erhalten, doch hier werden LEGACY sogar eine Spur härter und vor allem Riff lastiger. Mit voller Breitseite Stryper kommt "Forever In Your Arms" daher, man könnte die Band hier sogar als kleine Brüder der Bibel Rocker bezeichnen, ohne ihr spielerischen Können in den Schatten zu stellen. Mit einem coolen Groove stellt sich "Don’t Run Away" vor, "Red, White And Blue" und auch "Change Of A Broken Heart" sind klassische Melodic Rock Nummer, die einfach zeitlos klingen und auch heute wie damals einen Ohrwurm Charakter sondergleichen besitzen. Später bei "One Way Or The Other" geht es verhältnismäßig flott und hart zur Sache und auch "What A World" rockt wie die Wutz. Auch die restlichen Songs sind eine Mischung aus Melodic / Rock / AOR, aber was LEGACY vermieden haben ist eine Ballade, die sich sicherlich auch gut gemacht hätte. Schade, dass es so lange her ist, die Band hatte mehr als nur einen Achtungserfolg und ich würde auch heute gerne mal was neues von den Amis hören.

Aber was soll’s, dank dem Label haben wir eine Perle vergangener Tage neu auf CD bekommen, die man vor allem Stryper und Dokken Fans nur empfehlen kann.

Legacy fueron una de las leyendas del underground americano durante la década de los ochenta. En medio de un enorme boom de grupos de hard rock y hard rock melódico, Legacy se hicieron un nombre a base de ganar concursos y dar conciertos de primer nivel por todo el país.

Siguiendo los pasos de Stryper, Legacy ofrecían una propuesta de rock con momentos melódicos y otros momentos más cañeros, muy cercanos al heavy metal, manteniendo en casi todas sus canciones un mensaje de cristianismo. Apoyados sobre un gran trabajo de guitarras y una voz potente y con buen registro, Legacy grabaron varios EPs y temas sueltos para recopilatorios de la escena. Sin embargo, a pesar de que tuvieron dos contratos discográficos que les ofrecían la posibilidad de lanzar un LP, el grupo nunca llegó a hacerlo y acabó separándose.

Las puertas para una reunión nunca han estado cerradas y puede que en esta nueva década se abran más que nunca, ya que nos llega el lanzamiento de “Legacy”, un disco compuesto por todo el material que el grupo grabó en los ochenta, remasterizado y listo para ser disfrutado. Desde los primeros acordes de “Salvation Is Law” se perciben los orígenes de estos temas, compuestos y grabados en la década dorada del estilo

Los amantes del género deben estar de enhorabuena con canciones como “It’s Real”, “Forever In Your Arms”, “Changes Of A Broken Herat” o “Soldiers Unite”. Es fácil reconocer las señas de identidad del grupo: la voz de Doug Meacham y las guitarras de Fred Blanchard y Matt Rice se unen para construir melodías y estribillos fácilmente recordables, con un sonido claramente enfocado al directo.

Este lanzamiento demuestra que Legacy dejaron algunos temas dignos de ser recordacos como “One Way Or Another” (no confundir con el tema del mismo nombre de Blondie) o “Vision Of Perfection”. Sin lugar a dudas este disco es una pequeña joya, una cápsula del tiempo para todos los amantes del estilo.

Sin duda un gran lanzamiento, casi imprescindible para todos los fans de grupos como Stryper o Europe.

La copertina potrebbe appartenere a una power metal band brasiliana di serie B, ma il marchio Eönian Records lascia pochi dubbi sul genere di riferimento di questo gruppo: siamo ovviamente di fronte all'ennesima hard rock band ripescata dal cilindro magico dall'etichetta americana. Nello specifico, questi ragazzi di Columbus, Ohio, proponevano un hard rock melodico di stampo cristiano. Stryper, Scorpions e Dokken le influenze dichiarate, ed effettivamente il risultato è un mix delle suddette formazioni, con una leggera preponderanza per il combo di Los Angeles, spesso citato dai soli di chitarra, ma anche dalla voce di Doug Meacham, piuttosto simile a quella di Don Dokken. L'immediatezza non era probabilmente una virtù in dote al quintetto, ma questo gioca a favore della longevità dell'album, che si lascia ascoltare con piacere anche dopo ripetuti passaggi. Fra brani più hard rock oriented (“Red White, & Blue”, “Change Of A Broken Heart”), altri più squisitamente heavy (“Salvation Is Law”, “Cross The Line”) e l'immancabile ballata (“Forever In Your Arms”) i circa 57 minuti di durata del disco scorrono senza particolari picchi, ma nemmeno ripide discese. I testi, manco a dirlo, parlano quasi tutti di fede e cristianità. Nonostante la loro devozione e la benedizione del “capo supremo”, non sono riusciti a firmare un contratto decente, e nel 1992 hanno fatto la fine di tutti gli altri grazie al solito grunge. “Ma se c'è una giustizia divina, un giorno questo album uscirà” devono aver pensato. E considerando la fine che ha fatto Curt Kobain, ed il fatto che questo cd sia qui sulla mia scrivania, probabilmente c'è davvero.

De las épocas gloriosas del Hard Rock Cristiano el sello musical 'Eonian Records' nos trae un disco extraído de los ochenta, de la banda cristiana 'Legacy' que fue una banda que empezó a ser conocida allá por el año de 1987 y que tuvo un solo pero excelente disco auto titulado 'Legacy', lamentablemente en los noventa con el auge del Grunge no pudo ser conocida pero ahora lanzan al mercado su único disco para todos los fanáticos del Hard Rock.

Este excelente disco cuenta con 14 canciones, realmente una excelente producción, la voz de Doug Meacham es increíble y el trabajo en guitarras es excepcional. La canción 'Salvation Is Law', un gran tema que nos introduce al disco mediante un intro instrumental, para luego pasar a las guitarras fuertes y escuchar una voz realmente adecuada a este estilo.  

'Cross The Line' es una de las mejores canciones del disco, con guitarras clásicas y una voz combinada con los coros la hace muy fuerte y especial dentro del disco con un solo de guitarra corto adecuado al corte musical.

Con el tema 'Forever in your Arms' tenemos el tema típico de corte soñador, al igual que la canción 'Change Of A Broken Heart', muy al estilo de las románticas de Stryper, con un acompañamiento excelente y muy logrado con una voz que merece la atención. Luego tenemos 'Don't Run Away' y 'Red, White', and Blue interesantes canciones que mezclan una fuerza en sus melodías.

Con 'Comin' Along' tenemos la canción que sale de lo común, realmente una muy buena canción con un sonido vocal muy diferente a las demás canciones, solos de guitarra y acompañamientos que desde el inicio hasta el final de la canción logran atraer al oyente y que seguramente serán de las preferidas.

Luego tenemos los temas 'Soldiers Unite', 'One Way Or The Other', 'Live It' y 'Model Citizen', temas más pesados y de gran calidad, son muy interesantes canciones que mezclan una fuerza en sus melodías que se acercan a un sonido más heavy.

El disco termina con la canción 'Vision Of Perfection', una versión muy metal característica del Hard Rock del noventa, más pesado y melódico que las demás canciones.

En definitiva 'Legacy' es un verdadero legado de esta banda de Hard Rock, con un excelente trabajo que seguramente será uno de los mejores discos lanzados este año y que volverán a traer a los fanáticos a las mejores épocas del Metal.

J’attends toujours avec impatience les sorties de ce superbe label qu’est EÖNIAN REC car jusqu’alors je n’ai jamais été déçu !

Pour peu que vous soyez sensible à la scène Underground de la fin des 80’s dans le registre Hard Heavy mélodique américain bien sûr !

Nous avons cette fois LEGACY un groupe de l’Ohio qui a vu le jour en 1987 et qui s’est vite fait un nom dans les circuits « réservés » aux groupes de White Metal !

C’est ainsi que LEGACY a ouvert pour REZ, SHOUT, SACRED WARRIOR entre autres.

Les influences du groupe vont de STRYPER à MOTLEY CRUE selon les titres !

Il faut dire que si les messages religieux sont bien présents, le groupe a visiblement décidé de les faire passer par le biais de rythmiques Heavy bien présentes (enfin aussi Heavy qu’a pu l’être STRYPER par exemple). Model Citizen aura même un air de VAN HALEN !

Les titres sont tirés de démos 1988, 1989 et 1990, la production est bonne et si vous aimez le style vous apprécierez l’album du début à la fin !

Sur certains titres (comme Red, White And Blue, un des meilleurs titres) je retrouve le style de composition (chant y compris) de STORMWITCH (époque Eyes Of The Storm), et sur d’autres un petit quelque chose du groupe TNT (Norvège) à ses débuts…

Le titre Soldier Unite, plus Heavy Metal , sera un des autres grands moments de cet album, avec Salvation Is Law, It’s Real, Cross The Line, One Way Or The Other, le très rythmé What A World ou Vision Of Perfection.

Mais je n’ai trouvé aucun titre dispensable, il y a vraiment un très bon niveau tout du long des quatorze titres !

En tout cas une belle Anthologie de plus qui satisfera les amateurs du genre et les fans de STRYPER surtout !

Angelica + Shout + Stryper = Legacy? Oh yes... it's mathematical metal at its finest terminology and structure. Pretty basic stuff actually if you're familiar with the above mentioned acts. It's "christian" metal of the eighties, and back then, considered as controversial, labeled as blasphemous by conservative believers (mostly in the states though) who lambasted bands for wedding what they deemed 'the devil's music' to the holy gospel. The story of Legacy began on September 17, 1987, in Reynoldsburg, Ohio. Some local youth minister felt called to build and manage a band that could not only rock but share the gospel of love.

Doug Meacham (vocals), Matt Rice (guitar), Fred Blanchard (guitar), John D Rice (bass) and 'Jungle' John Jenkins, answered the call and the rest is as you may suspect history. There's 14 tracks on offer on their self-titled debut CD and they're all recorded between the years of 1988 to 1990. You have a couple of "hit" singles such as: "Forever In Your Arms" and "Live It", both rather typical of its time and v-e-r-y much in the tradition of Stryper. Seriously, I dare you to come up with any other band than Stryper while listening to the rather catchy and uplifting rock of "Forever In Your Arms". No can do - simply impossible. Opener, "Salvation Is Law", a nice mix of the first Guardian, Angelica, and the first Stryper album. The next track, "It's Real", and its christian undertow merely serves to light a fire under the band. Actually, Legacy made no bones about being a "christian" metal band. However, a more suitable description should/would read a metal band consisting of five christian musicians, yeah?

The band was featured in both CCM Magazine and Heaven's Metal Magazine. Their singles appeared on compilations from Pure Metal and Star Song Records. They were on the very brink of being signed, but the lord works in mysterious ways and sadly no record deal back then. To be frank though, there's hardly anything mysterious about Legacy and their music. They simply didn't have enough of good material? At least not according to these songs as the fine quality of already mentioned tracks doesn't last throughout the CD. Excellent vocals, great musicians, but overall so-so material. Any mad collector of CCM, White Metal, Pure Metal, Intense, Pakaderm, etc, can't go all wrong here though. Final Verdict: Not too shabby, but hardly essential schtuff.

Se cerco la traduzione di "Legacy" le parole che escono sono: datato, antiquato ed eredità... tutte parole che si potrebbero ben associare all'album di questa band nata nella seconda metà degli anni 80. Sonorità "datate" quindi, provenienti direttamente da quella decade, un pò "antiquate" per chi ascolta hard rock nel 2010 e che "ereditano" tutti i clichè del class metal made in USA.

A tratti forse un pò troppo heavy per i miei gusti, questo disco potra' invece trovare degli estimatori dai fan di Dokken ("It's Real", "Cross the Line", "Don't Run Away"), Stryper ("Forever In Your Arms" è quasi imbarazzante per l'assomiglianza con la band di Michael Sweet) o gruppi come Fifth Angel o Holy Soldier.

Poco altro da aggiungere, genere e sound spero di averli detti al meglio, io continuo a preferire gli originali.

Hacía meses que no tenía la oportunidad de reseñar un lanzamiento de esa discográfica americana llamada Eonian Records. Afortunadamente en las próximas semanas os esperan unas buenas lecturas de multitud de discos de estos chicos que se dedican exclusivamente a rescatar a bandas que en su momento no pudieron tener una buena carrera discográfica a falta de un buen contrato o que simplemente cayeron en el olvido ya sea por mala suerte o por la llegada del grunge.

En esta ocasión os traigo a los LEGACY desde Columbia, Ohio. Su música se centra en un hard rock de corte cristiano altamente influenciado por grupos del momento como los grandiosos STRYPER, los más heavies BARREN CROSS y BLOODGOOD e incluso un fuerte sonido melódico de DOKKEN o SCORPIONS.

El grupo se creó en 1987, ganaron un concurso de batalla de bandas en el club heavy metal Alrosa Villa heavy y telonearon a peña como BON JOVI. Todo parecía estar a su favor hasta que el guitarrista Matt Rice se fue para cumplir inquietudes musicales más alternativas, lo cual desembocó que poco tiempo después también partiera el segundo guitarrista Fred. Ese fue el principio del fin, multitud de problemas internos y una cuestionable reencarnación hacia derroteros más grunge (año '92) hicieron que todo se acabara yendo al traste. La cosa tiene delito puesto que echando un vistazo general a los temas que componen este CD, más de uno se tirará de los pelos pensando en cómo estos chicos se quedaron a mitad de trayecto ya que con más apoyo y vientos a favor, podrían haberse colado entre los grandes de la escena.

Dando comienzo a este viaje retro, oiremos de primera el inicio acústico de "Salvation Is Law" que luego se torna hacia el más puro sonido de los hermanos Sweet con una gran voz aguda y una batería de sonido 100% 80's. "It's Real" dedicada al profundo amor hacia Cristo convence más aún que la anterior por tener una base melódica excelente con grandes solos y un estribillo épico.

"Cross The Line" se gira hacia una vertiente más heavy con guitarras de infarto creando un impenetrable muro de riffs. "Forever In Your Arms" es algo más sensiblera y nos recuerda nuevamente a esa gran balada de STRYPER llamada "Calling On You". En el siguiente "Red, White And Blue" el medio tiempo machacón engaña para luego en el estribillo pisar el acelerador en un tema que quizás exceda en duración pero que contiene curiosos cambios de ritmos y un gran solo.

"Change Of A Broken Heart" hará relamerse a los hard rockeros más ochenteros con una melodía bastante pastelosa pero que tiene su gracia. Más adelante me gustaría destacar otros como "Soldiers Unite" con unas grandes voces tanto de coros como de Doug Meacham, la cañerísima "One Way Or The Other" que sorprende con su velocidad desde su comienzo con un adecuado uso de wah-wah y unas guitarras que suenan de espanto, y finalmente "What A World" que retorna al hard más clásicote.

Geniales estos LEGACY, tienen temas realmente espectaculares y accesibles que nos incitan a volver a escuchar. Esperemos que Eonian puedan rescatar más grabaciones inéditas de estos americanos y podamos seguir disfrutando de ellos.

Primeiro relançamento da Eonial records de uma banda cristã, uma banda que estilisticamente executa um hard & heavy de primeira.

Ouvindo as 14 faixas deste álbum, podemos eprceber algumas semelhanças com o Stryper, o que não chega a ser uma surpresa, pois trata-se da única banda cristã que teve um reconhecimento e sucesso enorme no mundo.

Em "Salvation is the Law" essa semelhança com Stryper fica mais claro, muito boa faixa, que só não ganha da que vem a seguir, pois a "It's Real" tem tudo que um fã de melodic rock gosta, excelente melodia, riffs, e refrão para cantar junto, lembrando um pouco Dokken.

A semi balada "Forever In Your Arms" me lembrou muito Stryper, belissima música, bom bom uso de backing vocals.

Em "Red, White & Blue" a veia mais heavy metal da banda surge, e não decepciona, o mesmo acontece na "Soldiers Unite", essa com riffs matadores e refrão idem.

Se você gosta daquele tipico som anos 80 na onde melodic rock, não deixa de conferir "Change Of A Broken Heart", uma das minha preferidas do cd.

Outra banda que eles soam parecidos, é com a banda Angelica, o que não pode ser uma coisa ruim.

Uma banda recomendada independente da sua crença, pois aqui o que predomina é boa música, e isso é uma "pregação" que vale a pena.

För några veckor sedan kunde ni läsa en recension om bandet Charlotte’s något försenade skivdebut. Det är det amerikanska bolaget Eonian Records som släppt ett legat över det bandets karriär, en karriär som aldrig innefattade ett skivsläpp. Passande nog så släppte Eonian samtidigt en platta med ett annat band som hamnade i samma situation när de var aktiva under senare delen av 80-talet. Ett band med det passande namnet LEGACY och deras summering av diverse inspelningar, demos och tilltänkta albumlåtar är en lika god kulturgärning som den som bolaget gjorde för Charlotte. Jag gillade verkligen gruppen Charlotte, men har haft lite svårare med gruppen LEGACY och det beror inte på att bandet var ett, så kallat white rock band, utan på sångaren Doug Meacham’s extremt jobbiga vibrato.

LEGACY vågade sig ut med sin kristna hårdrock strax efter det att Stryper, som första kristna rockband, slog igenom även i icke-troende kretsar. Annars har det varit ovanligt få band i den amerikanska kristna grupperna som tagit steget fullt ut och försökt sig på en karriär som rockmusiker fullt ut. Och har det någon gång kommit fram något band som är på väg att lyckas så har det sällan varit något band som har haft något eget att säga, och då menar jag inte texterna, utan de flesta banden har sneglat på vad som händer i den stora världen och kopierat det. Stryper är ett av mycket få kristna rockband som verkligen haft en egen stil, LEGACY hade det inte. Ja, om man inte ska räkna dit Doug’s rätt jobbiga röstvibrato som jag nämnde tidigare!

Plattan består av fjorton spår av varierande kvalitet produktionsmässigt, men i regel med ganska trist ljud. Låtmässigt så går det också lite upp och ner, men jag tycker ändå att bandet hade viss talang för att skriva bra rocklåtar i tyngre AOR-stil, för låtar som ”Salvation is law”, ”It’s real”, ”Cross the line”, ”Don’t run away” och ”Soldiers unite” är riktigt bra låtar. Det låter tidstroget och att bandet har inspirerats av Stryper är inte svårt att höra, men det finns också inslag från, till exempel, Dokken, Lynch Mob, Kix och Quiet Riot i LEGACY’s musik.

Ett plus vill jag också ge till bandets gitarrister, Matt Rice och Fred Blanchard, och speciellt till den av de två, eller båda, som spelar riktigt läckra solon på alla plattans spår. De är oerhört tekniskt snabba, men samtidigt väldigt melodiösa och det är en kombination som är lite ovanlig. Fastän bandet bär en kristen tro så genomsyrar det inte helt och hållet skivans texter. Någonstans här och där förstår man att Doug sjunger om livet med sin tro och vill få lyssnaren att tänka över sin livssituation, och har du svårt med denna typ av band så är det ingen skiva för dig. Men gillar du klassisk 80-tals hårdrock så kan det vara något att kolla upp. Men jag har varnat för sångaren…

Es ist die "Archäologische Methode", die sich die Damen und Herren bei Eönian Records auf die Fahnen geschrieben haben, was soviel heißt, dass turnus-mäßig Combos aus dem Sleaze-, Hard Rock oder Glam-Metal-Bereich, die hauptsächlich Ende der 80er, Anfang der 90er rockten, ohne einen geeigneten Deal zur Verbreitung ihrer Mucke zu finden, ausgebuddelt und so nach Jahren in der Versenkung veröffentlicht werden. So wurden jüngst die vorzüglichen Werke von Sgt. Roxx, Felony oder Strike Twice zu Tage gefördert und die neuesten Resurrektionen hören auf die Namen Charlotte und Legacy. Um Letztere soll es zunächst gehen bzw. um ihr selbst betiteltes Album - und soviel vorweg: manchmal stößt man eben bei der ganzen Graberei nur auf Katzengold.

Anfangs darf die Aufmachung gelobt werden: schickes Booklet mit Band-Historie und Liner Notes zu den einzelnen Tracks. Daraus geht hervor, dass Legacy ihre Hochzeit 1988/89 hatten und als Christian Metal-Band in Reynoldburg, Ohio gegründet wurden. Neben den üblichen Kontroversen ums Genre führten diverse Besetzungswechsel zum Ende der Band just in dem Moment, als sie sich eine loyale Fanschar erspielt hatte. Die Songs wurden bis auf die beiden letzten Tracks allesamt 1989 im Workshop Studio (Chillicothe, Ohio) aufgenommen und für den 2010er Output neu bearbeitet. Leider bleibt der Gesamtsound trotzdem etwas dünn (vom Bass hört man zeitweise kaum was) - kann man aber drüber weg sehen. Worüber nicht, ist die fehlende Klasse einiger Nummern und die gar zu platten Lyrics. Doch zunächst die Positiva.

Da wären die stark an Dokken erinnernden "It's Real" (Doug Meacham kommt streckenweise an den Don ran und auch das Gitarren-Duo Rice/Blanchard eifert Mr. Lynch nicht gerade unbeholfen nach), das das Album stimmig intoniert, der Rocker "Don't Run Away" im Stile von "Into The Fire" oder das lustige "Soldiers Unite" (ja, ja die Kreuzzüge!). Andere Stücke weisen eine Poison-Schlagseite auf und machen sich dabei nicht schlecht. Man vergleiche dazu "Comin' Along" oder den Ohrwurm "Red, White, And Blue" (oh ja, the American Dream!). Als sehr gelungen erweist sich "One Way Or The Other", das gar den Horror Metal von Halloween vor dem inneren Ohr erscheinen lässt, und das bissige "What A World".
Die andere Seite der Medaille "zieren" aber furchtbar weich gespülte Songs wie "Forever In Your Arms", "Change Of A Broken Heart" oder "Live It", die dazu kompositorisch völlig unausgegoren wirken und in denen die Schmacht-Lyrics einfach nur nerven. Die beiden späteren Aufnahmen "Model Citizen" und "Vision Of Perfection" zeigen die Band in weit metallischere Gewänder gekleidet, was Legacy gut steht.

Mehr als eine Drei Plus ist am Ende nicht drin, denn es fehlen neben den aufgezeigten Schwächen auch einfach die Übernummern, die einen bleibenden Eindruck hinterlassen könnten.

La Eonian Records è costantemente alla ricerca di piccole leggende del sottobosco white metal americano delle decadi scorse. Non deve, quindi, meravigliare questa ristampa di Legacy, debut album dell’omonima band. I Legacy, originari dell’Ohio, sono nati verso la metà degli anni 80 per opera del pastore Eric Adams, che ha riunito intorno a sé una manciata di musicisti per portare la parola di Dio nel blasfemo mondo dell’heavy metal. Questi crociati rispondevano al nome di: Doug Meacham (voce) Matt Rice (chitarra), Fred Blanchard (chitarra ritmica), John D. Rice (basso) e “Jungle” Jhon Jenkinsg (batteria). I Legacy verso la fine degli 80 hanno goduto di una certa fama, tanto da tenere concerti con band di un certo livello: Metallica, Guns, Def Leppard e Bon Jovi. Questa notevole attività live, però, non ha portato a una longeva e prolifica carriera: Legacy rimane l’unico album edito dal gruppo. I brani contenuti nell’opera risalgono a un periodo che va dal 1988 al 1990. Il genere proposto è un hard-heavy di scuola americana. Tagliente, roccioso, e accattivante. Le band a cui possono essere accostati questi statunitensi sono Dokken, Stryper, Lizzy Borden, WASP e White Lion. I testi sono di matrice cristiana, questa ristampa contiene delle note introduttive di ogni song (oltre che una mini biografia della band) che ne illustrano il messaggio. L’unico appunto che mi sento di fare, è relativo alla voce di Doug Meacham, che di tanto in tanto mostra la corda, soprattutto nelle parti alte. Ma per il resto tutto gira al meglio, tanto che non ho remore a consigliare questo album a tutti gli amanti di un certo sound americano.

クリスチャン･メタル･バンド：Legacyの未発表・デモ音源を集めたアルバムリリース

80年代に製作されながらも陽の目をみなかった音源を発掘するレーベルEonianよりリリースされた本作。87年にオハイオで結成されたLegacyにより、88～90年に掛けてソングライティング＆レコーディングが行われた14曲は、懐かしき“クリスチャン・メタル・サウンド”を堪能できる好盤だ。

特に若いファンには“クリスチャン・メタル”という言葉に馴染みが薄いと思うが、要はイエス・キリストを賛美する内容の歌詞を持ったHR/HMのこと。アメリカではクリスチャン音楽のマーケットがあり、その中のメタリックなバンドの総称としてそ呼んでいるのだ。有名どころで言えば、ステージから聖書を投げていたSTRYPERなんかもソレだったりする。我々日本人にとってはあまりクリスチャンだとかそうでないとか関係ないものの、このクリスチャン・メタルという音楽が80～90年の日本のマニアの間で評価されていた。なぜなら、彼らの楽曲には共通してウェットなメロディーと綺麗なヴォーカル・ハーモニーが存在する日本人好みのHR/HMだったからであり、ここに紹介するLegacyも例に漏れないサウンドを聴かせてくれる。

当然ながら20年以上前であり、またインディーズでの製作であることから今の作品と比べるとサウンドはチープだし、深いリバーブも時代を感じさせる。しかし、このあたりがまたマニア心をくすぐり、当時のクリスチャン・メタルを探して聴いていたファンにはたまらないだろう。キャッチーなコーラスを擁するメロディック･ハードロック「It's Real」や’Forever In Your Arms’ から、ツインギターのハモリをフィーチャーしたメタリックな「One Way or the Other’ など割と幅広く楽しめる点も○。さすがにSTRYPERやTHE BRAVEほどのクオリティーは望めないものの、GURDIAN、HOLY SOLDIERなんかを聴いていたファンには十分に通用するレベルなので、興味のある方はまずはこちらから試聴をどぞ

Κατά τη διάρκεια που οι Legacy ήταν ενεργοί, δηλαδή από το 1987 έως το 1992, οι Legacy κυκλοφόρησαν ένα EP και ένα single. Απ’ όσες πληροφορίες κατάφερα να βρω, η συγκεκριμένη κυκλοφορία αποτελεί τη συγκέντρωση όλων των τραγουδιών που ηχογράφησαν οι Legacy, και την τοποθέτηση τους σε ένα CD για πρώτη φορά. Αρκετά όμως με τα μαθήματα ιστορίας, ας περάσουμε στο προκείμενο.
Το Legacy αποτελείται από 14 τραγούδια, στα οποία υπάρχει συνυπάρχουν στοιχεία από τον poserάδικο hard rock ήχο εκείνης της εποχής καθώς και κάποια πιο παραδοσιακά metal περάσματα. Τα τραγούδια του δίσκου κινούνται από up-tempo (τα οποία αποτελούν και την πλειοψηφία) μέχρι μπαλάντες (αλήθεια πιστεύετε ότι θα μπορούσαν να λείπουν οι μπαλάντες από έναν τέτοιο δίσκο;). 
Η δουλειά που έχει γίνει στις κιθάρες (τόσο στα riffs όσο και στα solos) είναι πολύ προσεγμένη, χωρίς ωστόσο να είναι κάτι που αφήσει με το στόμα ανοιχτό. Για μπάσο και τύμπανα δε νομίζω ότι υπάρχει λόγος να αναφερθώ, καθώς, εκτός ελαχίστων εξαιρέσεων, στα hard rock συγκροτήματα των 80’s αποτελούσαν απλά τη βάση, πάνω στην οποία οι κιθαρίστες, αλλά κυρίως ο τραγουδιστής, θα ξεδίπλωναν το ταλέντο του. Και ερχόμαστε έτσι στα φωνητικά. Στον τομέα αυτό οι Legacy έχουν περισσότερα κοινά σημεία με τις σύγχρονες τους αμερικάνικες μπάντες (με τα υψίφωνα φωνητικά) παρά με τις αντίστοιχες hard rock, χωρίς όμως ο Doug Meacham (ο τραγουδιστής των Legacy) να το παρακάνει, κάτι που στην τελική λειτουργεί υπέρ τους.
Αν σε όλα όσα είπαμε παραπάνω προσθέσετε και το γεγονός ότι οι στίχοι των Legacy είναι χριστιανικού περιεχομένου, ποιο συγκρότημα σας έρχεται στο μυαλό; Όσοι είπατε Stryper μαντέψατε σωστά, αν και η ερώτηση δεν ήταν και ιδιαίτερα δύσκολη, κάθε άλλο θα έλεγα. Δε νομίζω ότι όποιος ακούσει το “Legacy” δε θα βρει ομοιότητες με τους Stryper, αλλά αν κάποιος κατηγορήσει τους Legacy ως μιμητές των Stryper, εκτός από άδικο, για τους Legacy, θα ήταν και μια λάθος ή ίσως βιαστική εκτίμηση, καθώς μεταξύ των δυο συγκροτημάτων υπάρχουν αρκετές διαφορές.
Αν μια μίξη hard rock και metal riffs (των αρχών της δεκαετίας του ’80), κολλητικές μελωδίες, χορωδιακά (ή μήπως πρέπει να πω υμνικά;) ρεφρέν σας ακούγεται ενδιαφέρουσα, τότε το “Legacy” είναι μια κυκλοφορία που αξίζει να τσεκάρετε.
